About the Remington 40-X
The Remington Model 40-X is a target and match bolt-action rifle family derived from the Model 700 action, blueprinted and tightened for precision. Catalogued from 1961 and continued as the 40-XB from 1964, it was offered in a wide range of chamberings from .22 LR up through 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester to .300 Winchester Magnum, in both single-shot match and internal-magazine repeater forms. It became a mainstay of US benchrest, smallbore, High Power and Palma competition and of US military marksmanship training.
Every Remington 40-XB shipped with three factory-fired five-shot 100-yard test targets plus the exact load data used, guaranteeing match-ready accuracy straight out of the box; in 1966 the US Army Marksmanship Unit hand-built about twenty 40-X rifles in 6mm International for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

Optional 2-ounce (~0.56N) match trigger is among the lightest factory triggers ever made. The USMC M40 sniper rifle is built on the Model 700, not the 40-X; sources sometimes conflate them.
