About the Remington-Hepburn No. 3 Schuetzen

The Remington-Hepburn No. 3 Schuetzen is a single-shot, falling-block target rifle built on Lewis L. Hepburn's action for E. Remington and Sons, in which the breechblock is raised and lowered by a lever on the trigger guard. Configured for the German-American Schuetzen offhand shooting game, it carried a heavy 30- or 32-inch part-octagonal barrel, a Vernier tang rear sight with hooded front sight, standard double-set triggers, a palm rest, an ornate Swiss-type Schuetzen buttplate and a high-grade checkered walnut stock. It was chambered for the popular offhand match cartridges of the black-powder era, most commonly the .32-40 and .38-55 Winchester.

Lewis Hepburn was superintendent of Remington's mechanical department and a member of the American Creedmoor international rifle team; his falling-block action gave Schuetzen shooters a Remington platform ornate enough for the offhand matches and false-muzzle muzzleloading precision of the Schuetzenfest.

Also known as the 'Walker-Hepburn Rifle' after the Remington Walker-marked barrels used on many examples. Offered both as a standard breech-loader and as a muzzle-loading version with a removable false muzzle supplied with a brass bullet starter and accessories. Part of the No. 3 Hepburn family (Sporting, Match, Mid- and Long-Range Creedmoor, Schuetzen and Long-Range Military grades); roughly 10,000 No. 3 Hepburn rifles of all grades were built between 1883 and 1907.
