The Winchester Model 12 Featherweight is a lightweight sporting variant of the classic Model 12 internal-hammer pump-action shotgun, produced from 1959 to 1962. Chambered in 12 gauge, the Featherweight shed roughly half a pound from the standard Model 12 by replacing the machined-steel trigger guard with an aluminum alloy unit and adopting a simplified takedown system. Offered with ventilated or plain barrels in lengths from 26 to 30 inches, the Featherweight retained the Model 12's celebrated smoothness of action and all-machined steel receiver while appealing to upland hunters who valued reduced carry weight in the field. Approximately 52,000 Featherweights were built during its short production run, making it one of the more distinctive and collectible variations of the 'Perfect Repeater.'

The Featherweight arrived late in the Model 12's life as Winchester tried to keep the aging, labor-intensive pump gun competitive against cheaper stamped-steel rivals. By swapping the heavy forged trigger guard for aluminum alloy, gunsmiths trimmed weight for upland hunters who walked miles after grouse and pheasant. It was a stopgap: within five years the entire Model 12 line was retired because each gun simply cost too much to machine, making the Featherweight a poignant late chapter of the 'Perfect Repeater.'

The Featherweight's principal weight savings came from its aluminum alloy trigger guard and a redesigned, simplified takedown system that also made field disassembly easier. Because the alloy guard is softer than the original forged steel, surviving examples are frequently found with dents or wear, and original guards are prized by collectors. The Featherweight was offered only in 12 gauge and was superseded within a few years as Winchester moved toward less labor-intensive designs; the entire standard Model 12 line was discontinued in 1964 owing to high manufacturing costs. Serial numbers place most Featherweight production between the late 1950s and early 1960s.
