About the Mauser Model 1871

The Mauser Model 1871 (Gewehr 71) was the first rifle designed by the Mauser brothers and the first metallic-cartridge rifle adopted by the unified German Empire. A single-shot, bolt-action rifle chambered in the 11x60mmR Mauser black-powder cartridge, it established the Mauser turn-bolt action that would define military rifle design for decades.

The Model 1871 was the first of a long line of Mauser bolt-action rifles; its turn-bolt locking system became the template for nearly every military bolt-action rifle that followed, up to and including the Karabiner 98k.
